Championship returns with a bang
Catch up on all the action from the first round of 2025.
Caldy picked up their second win of the season as they beat Nottingham as tries galore were scored in the Championship.
Ealing Trailfinders remain comfortably installed at the top of the table after beating Chinnor on Friday, before Bedford Blues and Coventry saw off Ampthill and Doncaster Knights respectively.
Elsewhere, Hartpury impressed in beating Cornish Pirates, with London Scottish winners away to Cambridge.
Gallagher delivers last-gasp Caldy win
Matt Gallagher’s try three minutes from time sealed a stunning 27-22 win for Caldy at home to Nottingham.
Early tries for Tristan Woodman and JJ Dickinson had put the home side into a 12-3 lead, before Kai Owen got the visitors back within range.
Kegan Christian-Goss added another early in the second half as Nottingham moved 17-15 ahead and they looked in control when Nathan Tweedy crossed for their third.
But with the visitors down to 14 after a yellow card, Gallagher cut the deficit to two points with his first try, before another on 77 minutes wrapped up a comeback win for the Ravers.
Wilson at the double for Ealing
Tobi Wilson scored twice as leaders Ealing saw off Chinnor 28-8, picking up maximum points in the process.
Nick Smith had put Chinnor into an early lead at home, but Ealing responded with Mike Willemse crossing from a rolling maul.
Wilson added a second after jumping onto an offload from Craig Willis before Ben Harris ran in try number three for a 21-3 half-time lead.
Full-back Wilson notched his second of the night, and Ealing’s bonus point with a weaving run down the left, although the home side had the final say through Callum Pascoe.
Ealing director of rugby Ben Ward said: “I think Chinnor have played really well all season and I thought they played really well. We stuck in the fight and I’m delighted with five points.
“If you look at Chinnor’s home record, they have all been close games whether they have won or lost. We knew we were in for a battle.”
Bedford outlast Ampthill in derby success
Bedford Blues eventually saw off Ampthill 45-24 but not after being given a real scare in the second half of their derby clash.
Blues looked in control at 24-3 at the break, Joel Matavesi crossing twice either side of a Fred Tuilagi try.
But the second half was a different matter entirely as Ampthill fought back. Charlie Bracken got over for their first try before a score from Brandon Jackson made it a one-score game on 55 minutes.
Joe Howard pushed that lead back to 14 points only for Ampthill to hit straight back through Luke Thompson, the score converted to make it 31-24.
A Dean Adamson try four minutes from time finally sealed it and one more with the clock in the red from George Smith added some gloss to the scoreline.
Blues director of rugby Mike Rayer: “I was pleased with the first half and probably the end result. It was a hell of a game.
“Fair play to Ampthill. They certainly wrestled the momentum and the game was in the balance all the way through until we got the last but one try.”
Coventry hold on to edge out Knights
Coventry made it five wins in a row against Doncaster Knights but were made to sweat on their way to a 24-23 victory.
Obinna Nkwocha, Ryan Hutler and David Opoku had given the home side a good start as they led 21-12 at the break but they needed a late missed conversion to see it out.
Nkwocha had opened the scoring with an opportunistic try, only for Doncaster to hit back through Maliq Holden and then Zach Kerr.
Tommy Mathews set up Hutler for Cov’s second before Opoku grabbed another to stretch the advantage to nine points at the break.
Mathews added another penalty early in the first half, but two long-range penalties from Russell Bennett kept Doncaster right in the game.
Harry Davey then got over five minutes from time for Doncaster but Bennett was narrowly off-target with the touchline conversion before missing another long-range effort to win it from a final penalty.
Scottish and Hartpury with big wins
London Scottish put on a show as they won 48-26 away to Cambridge with Will Brown helping himself to two tries for the visitors.
The Exiles made a strong start with Matt Wilkinson and Hayden Hyde both crossing inside six minutes.
Will Trenholm and Brown then each crossed to stretch the lead to 24-7 with a bonus point by half-time, Archie Vanes with the Cambridge try.
Will Joseph, Brown again and Zach Carr allowed Scottish to pull further clear although Matt Hema and Ben Brownlie twice ensured that Cambridge earned a try bonus – Bryn Bradley having added an eighth try for the Exiles.
Hartpury were equally impressive as they earned a 34-10 win over Cornish Pirates.
Ethan Hunt got the ball rolling with a try after just three minutes from close range, with Brad Denty and Harry Short making it 17-3.
Hunt’s second brought up the bonus point before half-time as Hartpury led 24-3.
Alex Everett pulled a try back for Pirates on his return but Jarrard Hayler sealed the convincing win for Hartpury with their fifth try.
