Ealing Trailfinders retain Championship Cup

Ealing Trailfinders beat Jersey Reds 35-31 to secure back-to-back Championship Cup titles.

Ealing Trailfinders edged a close encounter with Jersey Reds on Saturday to retain the Championship Cup in front of 1,125 fans at the Trailfinders Sports Club.

A cagey first half meant Luke Daniels' conversion was the only difference between the two sides, after Jonah Holmes and Jordan Holgate traded early tries. Holmes added a second four minutes after the restart, but again the Reds hit back, this time through Antonio Harris. Jack Digby and Max Bodilly extended the Trailfinders' lead with two tries in quick succession just after the hour mark, before Ben Wollett darted over to give the visitors a glimmer of hope with 12 minutes to go. Any hopes of a Jersey fightback were soon scuppered, though, when second-half substitute George Davis barged over for Ealing's fifth in the 72nd minute. Harvey Biljon's side did manage to pull back two late scores through Holgate and Wollett, but it was too little too late, as the Trailfinders saw out another dominant performance in West London to clinch the 2022/23 Championship Cup.
