RFU Statement: Competition Update

An update on the movement of Championship and National 1 clubs following recent events at Worcester Warriors and Wasps.

The RFU has issued the following update on The Championship following recent events at Worcester Warriors and Wasps.

Given statements regarding the position of one or more Premiership clubs being relegated into the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 season, we wanted to give clarification on the movement of Championship and National 1 clubs.

The process for movement at the end of the Championship for the winner of the league, last place positions, and winner of National 1 has not changed:

If the winner of the Championship meets Premiership Minimum Operating Standards, they will be promoted to the Premiership, meaning no club would be relegated from the Championship, and one club would be promoted from National 1 into the Championship.

If the winner of the Championship does not meet the Premiership Minimum Operating Standards, they will not be promoted to the Premiership, meaning one club would be relegated from the Championship, and one club would be promoted from National 1 into the Championship.

Please note that as there is still uncertainty about many factors, we are working on season structures for a 12, 13 and 14 team Championship, and will keep you as up to date as we can.

We continue to work on the Championship Strategic Review Transition Group for a Premiership/Championship proof of concept Cup at the beginning of the 2023/24 Season.
