Round 3 Review
A round-up of the day's action in The Championship.
A high-scoring day in The Championship saw Jersey Reds, Bedford Blues, Doncaster Knights, Ealing Trailfinders, Coventry, and Nottingham all secure wins in Round Three. Today's results mean Jersey Reds and Ealing Trailfinders continue to lead the way at the top of the table, with both sides having secured maximum points after three rounds.
London Scottish 21 - 55 Jersey Reds
London Scottish kicked off the day's action at the RAG against Jersey Reds, and put in a dogged first half performance, heading into the break with just five points separating the two teams. The visitors exploded into life in the second half, though, with left wing Will Brown running in a hat-trick en route to a nine-try victory at The RAG. The Exiles rallied late on, scoring a brace in the closing stages of the game, but were unable to secure a try bonus point, as the Reds continued their impressive start to the season with a third-straight five-point win.
Cornish Pirates 21 - 41 Bedford Blues
The Blues pulled off arguably the result of the round with a 20-point win against Cornish Pirates. Mike Rayer's side turned around an eight-point half time deficit to stun a previously unbeaten Pirates team, with scrum half and captain Alex Day running in two tries, and the ever-reliable Will Maisey hitting 21 points from the tee. The result sees Bedford leapfrog Pirates into third place and lead the chasing pack behind Jersey Reds and Ealing Trailfinders.
Doncaster Knights 48 - 24 Richmond
Doncaster played their first home match of the season today against Richmond, and took maximum points despite trailing at the break and, at one stage, going down to 12 men after a spate of yellow cards late on. Richmond picked up a try bonus point, but it was the Knights who took the spoils at Castle Park, running in seven tries including braces from Maliq Holden and George Simpson, who continues his fine start to the season having joined over the summer from Hartpury.
Ealing Trailfinders 42 - 7 Hartpury
The reigning champions continued their points-perfect start to the season today with a scintillating late salvo against Hartpury. Despite the final scoreline, the visitors impressed for large swathes of the match and went into the break with the scoreline locked at 7-7. The impressive Carlo Tizzano put Ealing back in front in the 55th minute, before the Trailfinders pulled away in the final quarter of the match with four more tries, including a second for the former Waratah.
Coventry 26 - 24 Ampthill
Coventry and Ampthill played out a thriller at Butts Park Arena, as the hosts preserved their unbeaten status at home. Both sides scored four tries each in this knife-edged encounter, with three successful conversions to two proving the difference at the final whistle. Ampthill remain winless so far this season and will rue letting a seven-point half-time lead slip, but will take solace from two valuable bonus points on the road.
Caldy 19 - 27 Nottingham
Nottingham struck late with a try and a penalty to deny Caldy any bonus points at Paton Field, as The Archers continued their impressive start to the season with a second consecutive win on the road. Caldy led by two points with three minutes to go, but a converted Harry Graham try followed by a Sam Hollingsworth penalty saw the visitors clinch an eight-point win. It was another spirited performance from Caldy, who have clearly acclimatised well to life in The Championship, and a special mention should go to left wing Ben Jones, who made his 200th appearance for The Ravers this afternoon.
