Round 3 Team News
We take a look at how the teams line up in Round 3 of The Championship.
Round three. Three unbeaten teams. Three teams still looking for their first win.
Saturday’s line-up sees all six fixtures played on the same day for the first time this season, and if the opening two rounds are anything to go by, we’re in for another pulsating round in The Championship.

London Scottish kick off the action at The RAG against first-placed Jersey Reds at 14:00. The Exiles put in a much-improved performance against Bedford Blues last Saturday, running in six tries at Goldington Road before succumbing late on, while the visitors have scored more tries than any other team in The Championship and will no doubt be hoping to extend their lead at the top of the league.
Two 14:30 kick offs see Cornish Pirates host Bedford Blues, and Doncaster Knights take on Richmond. Pirates skipper John Stevens marks his 100th appearance for the club this weekend, while the Blues will be firmly focused on banking their first away win of the campaign having lost their season opener 26-18 at Coventry. Doncaster Knights put in an emphatic performance last Saturday against Hartpury to get their season firmly back on track after defeat to Ealing Trailfinders in Round One. The Knights will be favourites to win, but Richmond head coach Rob Powell believes the visitors are fully capable of challenging the Knights in their own back yard: "We know when we are on our money, we will give them a good game. We need to be at 8 or 9/10 to compete. If we do that we will have a good day."
The remainder of the day’s matches all kick off at 15:00. Newly promoted Caldy, fresh from their first-ever win at Championship level, name an unchanged starting XV to face Nottingham as they look to make it two wins from three on Saturday. The Archers have also started the season strongly, securing a bonus-point win on the road at London Scottish before pushing Cornish Pirates all the way at Lady Bay last weekend. Saturday’s clash at Paton Field will no doubt be a fascinating encounter between two teams in good form. Ampthill make the 50-mile journey to Butts Park Arena to face Coventry. Having had an unkind season-opening schedule, facing Ealing Trailfinders in Round One and Jersey Reds in Round Two, The Mob will be hoping to bank their points of the campaign this weekend. Coventry, meanwhile, will be determined to bounce back from a 40-14 defeat at The Stade Santander last weekend and preserve an unbeaten home record. Ealing Trailfinders welcome Hartpury to West London and will be focused on extending their points-perfect run into Round Three. So far, The Trailfinders have left it late to secure their try bonus-points, and will no doubt see this as an opportunity to put in a five-star performance as well as a five-point win. Hartpury, always a dangerous and unpredictable threat in The Championship, started well with a bonus-point win on the road at Caldy, before a 16-34 home defeat to Doncaster Knights, and now face the toughest of assignments against the pre-season favourites, who were buoyed this week by the appointment of former Wales international Jonathan Thomas as the club’s new Forwards Consultant.
