Round 7 Team News

The Championship returns after a two-week break. Here's what you need to know ahead of the action on Saturday.

The Championship season took an early twist in Round 6 when London Scottish pulled off a stunning 19-17 win against Ealing Trailfinders at The RAG. Further proof - if it was ever needed - that anyone can beat anyone on their day in this league. Round 7 is now upon us, with 10 teams in action on Saturday, and Doncaster Knights using their 'bye week' to take on URC outfit Edinburgh on Friday night at Castle Park.

Ampthill and Caldy will both be chomping at the bit to return to action this weekend after Ampthill sat out Round 6, and Caldy had their fixture against Bedford Blues postponed due to a frozen pitch. Ampthill have been in fine form this season with three wins from five and could edge back into the top three of The Championship with a bonus-point victory against Caldy.

Coventry, so impressive in the Premiership Rugby Cup, but with only two wins from five so far in The Championship, will see Saturday’s trip to Cambridge as an opportunity to bounce back from two consecutive defeats and return to the kind of form that saw them put a half-century on second-placed Doncaster Knights in Round 4. Cambridge will be no pushovers, though, as they go on the hunt for their first win of the campaign, having pushed high-flying Nottingham all the way at Lady Bay two weeks ago.

London Scottish will, no doubt, still be flying high from pulling off the biggest upset of the season a fortnight ago. The Exiles now head to the Westcountry to face Hartpury, a side that will also be full of confidence after producing an eye-catching result of their own in Round 6: a sensational 29-47 win against Coventry at Butts Park Arena.

If you’ve cast an eye over the @ChampRugby social channels over the last couple of months, you’ve probably seen the Bedford Blues or Nottingham backline doing something special at some point. The two sides have dominated our weekly Try of the Week competition this season and now go head to head at Goldington Road in a fixture that is all but guaranteed to provide five-star entertainment.

Ealing Trailfinders welcome fourth-placed Cornish Pirates to West London and, if other results go their way, could move seven points clear at the top of the table with a bonus-point win. The visitors have had a solid start to the season with three wins from five and will provide a stern test for the league leaders. Given what happened in Round 6...write the Pirates off at your peril.
