Cambridge Rugby Club was formed on 11 September 1923 by four local enthusiasts - with the help of Rev. H. K. P. Smith - who were concerned with the lack of rugby in the area.
With Rev Smith as the captain, the club played their fixtures on Thursdays and Saturdays. Their first victory came against East Anglian rivals Norwich where Cambridge won 20-0 away from home. This win helped drive them forward; from December onwards the Saturday team did not lose a game for the remainder of the season.
In addition to their 1st XV, the club runs four senior men’s teams and a women’s team. Their mini and junior section, which began in January 1975, offers rugby for those from 4 years old up to the age of 18.
Several Cambridge players have gone on to play international rugby: Dickie Jeeps, Andy Hancock, Ben Spencer, Fraser Dingwall, George Furbank and Alex Goode, who played all his junior rugby at the club.
The club won promotion to the Championship for the first time after the 2022-23 season after 18 years in the National Leagues. In their first season, they finished 11th.
